How to Tune a Guitar with Online Guitar Tuner

If you want to become a serious guitar player it is very important that you develop your tuning guitar skills. Depending on your ability to distinguish sounds, it will take you minutes, days, weeks, or months to fully achieve satisfactory results.

There are other ways to tune a guitar but we will focus on using online guitar tuners to tune your guitar by ear. You will need a computer with internet connection (to use one of the online guitar tuners provided here) and a guitar.

1 - Choosing the Guitar tuner
Choose one online guitar tuner provided at this site. Select a guitar tuner as interactive as you want. You may preview all online guitar tuners. Try them.

2 - Understanding How it Works
Make sure you understand all the different sections and functions of the guitar tuner you are about to use. You will find six different buttons representing the guitar strings (E, A, D, G, B, and E). It is useful that the guitar tuner can play each selected pitch on and on. Some online guitar tuner allow you to step up or down the keys in reference to the standard tune.

3 - Play the Tuner
Now you can get your guitar. Start by clicking on the button that will play the sound to the corresponding sixth string in your guitar(the lower pitch E). Depending on the guitar tuner that you have selected it should play the sound over and over until you turn it off.

4 - Tuning your Guitar
Play the sixth string (E) in your guitar and compare with the pitch produced by the online guitar tuner. Listen to the pitch of each strings at a time. Check how high or low the pitch sound is and adjust the tuning peg of your guitar until the sound matches the pitch coming from the computer. When you are done with that string, go to the next string.

5 - Checking the Tuning
After you Have adjuster all strings you can check if you got the tuning right.

  • Now put your finger on the 5th fret of the 5th string (A). This should make the 5th string produce the same pitch as the 4th string(D).
  • Put your finger on the 5th fret of the 4th string (D). This should make the 4th string produce the same pitch as the 3th string(G).
  • Put your finger on the 4th fret of the 3th string (G). This should make the 3th string produce the same pitch as the 2th string(B).
  • Finnaly, go to the 5th fret of the 2nd string (B) This should make the 3th string produce the same pitch as the 1th string(E).

And that's it... now you are able to tune your guitar by ear using an online guitar tuner. Maybe your tuning skills are not perfect yet. But believe me, if you keep working on it you'll make great progress soon.
